Committee for effective implementation of Infant Milk Substitute Act

In order to ensure effective implementation of the Infant Milk Substitute (IMS) Act, National Steering Committee on Breastfeeding and Infant and Young Child Feeding has recently been constituted. This committee will review the progress on enforcement of IMS Act and suggest corrective measures for effective implementation of the Act. This information was given by the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Prof. K.V. Thomas in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today.

Prof Thomas said that for enforcing the provisions of the Infant Milk Substitutes, Feeding Bottles and Infant Foods (Regulation of Production, Supply, and Distribution) Act, 1992 as amended in 2003, four voluntary organisations engaged in the field of child welfare and development and child nutrition have been notified in the IMS Act to make complaints in writing regarding the violation of the Act.
