Sheila Dikshit appointed as the new Governor of Kerala

Former Delhi chief minister Shiela Dikshit was on 4th March named as governor of Kerala. She replaces Nikhil Kumar, who has held the post since March 2013.

Dikshit's appointment as governor of the southern state came after Kumar stepped down amid speculation that he may contest the Lok Sabha poll from Bihar.

For Dikshit, the new assignment ends her political exile following her humiliating defeat in the recent assembly polls in Delhi. Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party's grand electoral opening with 28 seats had cost Congress dear and shrunk its tally to just 8 seats. Dikshit herself faced defeat at the hands of Kejriwal in her assembly constituency.

The announcement of Dikshit's name for Kerala Raj Bhavan comes hours before announcement of general elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim. Dikshit served as Delhi's chief minister from 1998 to 2013 before she lost to Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal in the December 2013 assembly polls. She lost her assembly seat by over 20,000 votes. The former CM had represented UP's Kannauj parliamentary constituency between 1984 and 1989.
