UK decided to honour the Indian heroes of World War I

United Kingdom in third week of March 2014 decided to honour the Indian soldiers, who participated in the World War I through a series of events. The events will be organised to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the conflict of World War I that started in 1914. 
To commemorate Indian involvement in the war that began in 1914, the British High Commission along with the United Service Institution in India has planned a series of events. In the First World War, about one million Indian soldiers participated of which over seventy thousand died during the war. 
The commemorative events will be organised in the UK, India and other parts of the world (the nations whose representatives participated in the historic conflict). As part of the 2014’s centenary events of World War I, special paving stones will be laid in the home towns of the soldier of UK who were awarded with the Vitoria Cross.
These stones will be given to the councils in the areas, where the Victoria Cross were born. The process of laying down the stones will be completed by 2018 of which 28 will be unveiled by 2015. In total 11 Indian soldiers were awarded with the Victoria Crosses of which six were from present India, three from the divided Pakistan and two were from Nepal.
