Japan announced to cancel next Antarctic Whaling Programme after UN ICJ decision

Japan on 4 April 2014 announced to cancel its next Antarctic whaling programme after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) of United Nation (UN) ordered an end to Whaling Programme of Japan.
The move was taken for the first time in more than 25 years.
Japan has decided to cancel research whaling Programme in the Antarctic for the fiscal year 2014-15. But Japan will continue its research whaling programme in other areas including the northern Pacific. Japan also has a coastal whaling program that is not covered by a commercial whaling ban.
The Hague-based ICJ issued a landmark ruling that found the Antarctic programme was a commercial activity disguised as science and ordered Japan to revoke existing whaling licences.
The next Antarctic hunt would have started in late 2014, while the most recent finished in March 2014.
